"translating words, transforming people"
We are Matt & Liz Wisbey. We have worked with Wycliffe Bible Translators, a Christian charity working with the most marginalised people around the world, since 2007.
Together with our two wonderful children, we are currently based in Gloucester UK and are involved in God's mission both in our local community and communities around the world.
We are passionate about helping people build deep, meaningful relationships - with one another, with God, and with the world around them - and through those relationships discovering their true identity and purpose. We'd love for you to join with us and get involved with what God is already doing in and through marginalised language communities all over the world. Read on to find out more.
(p.s. We love coffee, walking, gardening, movies, food and laughing as well!)
Our time is split between our local community and communities across the world.
At home we are part of the leadership team of our local church, supporting our children's and youth ministry, church communications, small group life, mission links and our strategy and governance.
Across the world, Matt is involved in training and supporting colleagues to make a positive difference in their communities. That's why we often think of ourselves as 'translators of people' - our work is essentially about helping people to communicate well with others, to build meaningful relationships, and to be effective cross cultural workers wherever God puts them. Matt does this in two main ways:
teaching on a Masters course in the UK for new Wycliffe staff from all over the world, leading a module that prepares them to be healthy change agents where they end up working,
facilitating learning events across the world, for staff already working in those places, working with a dynamic multicultural team!
Although wildly different in many ways, running through all aspects of our work is the thread of building and maintaining relationships.
Loads of reason (we'd love to grab a coffee and chat about this a bit more), but in a nutshell...
we believe that each and every one of us is unique, and together we have the potential to make a significant positive difference in the places where we live and work. We want to see that potential realised, helping people grow and use their own specific skills and interests.
at the same time, we believe this potential can only be fully realised through relationship with God - and so through our actions and our words we want to point people towards that relationship - demonstrating God's love in all we do and say.
we also know that there are structures and barriers in life that actively oppose people's desire to live life to it's fullest, we want to use our skills and experiences to reduce or remove those barriers. One simple example is that of education, and in particular being able to read and write. While this has been a basic human right for decades, there are still huge numbers of people who, because of the languages they use, are unable to fully realise that right. This is not right and we want to help remove this barrier.
We do not receive a salary for our work, but instead rely on people like you committing to partner with us through regular financial gifts.
If you are not yet a regular financial partner with us, might you consider joining our team? Our current partners give amounts between £10 and £150 each month. We thank God for every one, and are grateful for the supportive relationships that the money represents. The best way to support us financially is to set up a monthly gift online by clicking here.
If you are already one of our long-term financial partners, thank you! If it's been a while since you reviewed your gift, are you in a position to consider increasing it? And/or is there someone you could link us with who might be interested in hearing more about our work? Email us for any more information.
